Just tending the sheep. A "pastor's" heart
v. 7 - God looks at the heart

Intimacy - by Alanna 7/20/04
Ps. 131
Alanna's intense thought: "Have to go deeper" Psalm of intensity
    v. 2 - a strong portrait of intimacy

Meaning of intimacy:
  • Aviva - beyond superficial
  • Jonathan - vulnerability; comfort level
  • Johannah - knowing thoughts
  • Beth - knowing that making yourself vulnerable will be okay; being comfortable with being quiet
  • Megan - being exposed to the Lord; willing to show ugliness within; open to being helped
  • Caitlyn - not feeling judged or invalid
  • Martin - physical closeness
  • Danielle - time
We can keep pressing in toward intimacy with the Lord, as He draws us closer to each other
When you're intimate with someone, you become like them; you understand their heart
Philippians 3:7-14
Paul says: "I want to be in fellowship with Messiah and with His sufferings"
"The surpassing worth of knowing God" - desire for intimacy
Paul's heart is found only in Messiah

"Taking Every Thought Captive" - by Jonathan 7/12/04
2 Cor. 10:5
We already know we have to destroy the things that go against God
But we need to go further: "Slap the handcuffs on every single thought and drag it, perhaps kicking and screaming, before the throne of grace to see if it's covered by the blood of Yeshua."
A major reason why our group is where we are is because of agressiveness. We can't let up, and we must not relax.
Take every thought captive!
Forgiveness Deepened - by Alanna 6/21/04
Matt 18:23-35
“It’s a fun little scary message.” - Alanna

We love because He first forgave us. In this story we see that we forgive because he first forgave us.

Feelings of King David’s expectations in Psalm 51
  • He knows that if he’s truthful with G-d, then G-d will forgive him. He has an understanding that God’s love is never ending and not dependent on performance. His deepest longing is to be right with G-d at all times. Humility. Erin
  • He wants to have joy back in his life. Vs. 8,12 Keena
  • The first step in salvation is to recognize how wicked we are, the filth. David has reached that point. CWK
  • Steps that G-d takes to bring David back when he recognizes and confesses sin. JS
  • God works the change in there. We can’t save ourselves and make it right. EH
  • Vs 4 can also be made “gracious when you speak and blameless when you judge.” Very poetic. KAF
  • Vs 13-15 David is expecting to play a part in glorifying G-d and leading others to glorify G-d. G-d is so gracious that He will be able to restore back to a place where David can be used. It’s very comforting and encouraging. We are forgiven. AP
  • Vs 17 His heart was one of a broken heart. (This is after Nathan came and confronted him. During that time, his heart wasn’t completely bowed before the L-rd) Sacrifices of G-d are a broken and contrite heart. We first chose to do actions (prayer, reading, worship) out of passion; we need to re-evaluate our motives, and get passionate again.
Related thoughts
  • Forgiveness is both for giving and for getting. Important thing is that we will never receive unless we are forgiving and being forgiven. JS
  • Prodigal son. Younger brother when coming back, he took a chance coming back home that the father would take him back in, even if as a slave. He was humble and his father went above and beyond what needed to be done to reinstate as a son. The older brother thought the younger one should have to earn it – inside he was proud and judgmental. He thought it was based on performance. EH
Attributes of God: Love - by Erin 6/13/04
1 Cor 13:4-7; 1 John 4:12, 16-17; Gal 5:6

Insert "God" for "love" in 1 Cor 13:4-7
"God is patient, God is kind. He does not envy, he does not boast, he is not proud. He is not rude, he is not self-seeking, He is not easily angered, He keeps no record of wrongs. God does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. He always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."

"One Day": Priorities - by Jonathan 6/8/04
Psalm 63:1-6
What are you doing with your life, and why? Where do you spend the most time?
Are you willing to completely give that up just to be an usher in God’s house?

Johannah - submission must not be begrudging
Ken - submission requires perseverance [in humility]

Submission is more than letting something go; it's placing yourself under another person (or thing)
Perseverance: a conscious choice to carry forward against all odds -- belief-motivated
  • Romans 5:3-4
  • James 5:11
  • Hebrews 10:36
  • Revelation 2:3
Submission:
  • Romans 13:1
  • 1 Peter 5:5-7
  • Genesis 22:1-18
  • Psalm 103:5 - Submission satisfies desires, supplies strength
Perseverance and submission bring rewards
Every day, our daily walk is special
It can be harder to persevere when not in the heat of battle
"Wait on the Lord" = perseverance + submission [NOT bitterness]
It can't be rushed

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart” - by Jonathan 5/3/04
In the KJV: "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." - Ps. 119:11

Why?
1. Walking in the fulfillment of the new covenant
  Jer. 31:33-34
2. Inner sweetness; like a fruit
  v. 103: How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
3. Gaining understanding and wisdom
  v. 104a: I gain understanding from your precepts
  Prov. 1:1-3
4. Detesting sin
  v. 104b: therefore I hate every wrong path
5. Avoiding sin
  v. 11: that I might not sin against thee
6. Freedom with God
  v. 45: will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts

How?
1. Memorization
  a. The index card approach (with reference)
    i. On your mirror - Danielle Eib
ii. On your dashboard - Erin Howard
  b. 1 verse out of your quiet time each day, repeated throughout the day

2. Meditation
  a. Don't just read the Bible; think about how it applies directly to your life
This morning, I was in Isa 14:28-42, and read front-page article on killing of Jewish wife and kids in Gaza. Led me to pray for Israel
  b. Dwelling on a Scripture passage often causes it to sink into you, deeper than you may consciously realize

3. Application
  a. Heb 4:12 - the Word will judge your heart, sharpening your conscience
  b. Different approach to life in general
    i. Difficult financial situations
    ii. Sarcasm and judgmentalism

It will change your life. But it's a choice YOU have to make.

On Prophecy - by Rohn 3/29/04
Both prophecy and teaching must be tested:

1) The Spirit may have been right, but the vessel may have misspoken, failed to see correctly, or you (or the venerable scribe) may have misheard. Prophecy and teaching are not Scripture.

2) Check it out with the Word of G-d for yourself.

3) In a multitude of counselors there is safety--get other perspectives from mature believers and congregational leadership.

4) Look for independent confirmation and agreement.

5) Remember that the purpose of prophecy and teaching is rarely to provide us with final answers, but to open ourselves up to the maturing work of the Holy Spirit.

"It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, But the glory of kings is to search out a matter." - Proverbs 25:2

Abiding in the Spirit - by John, Rohn and James 3/29/04

John Rose

John 15:7
abiding in the spirit day by day
looking to be open to whatever pruning He has for you
Matthew 6:14-15
one of the fastest ways to get out of communion with the L-rd is to be judgemental or unforgiving towards others
"if you forgive men" ~ it's up to us to forgive them
1 Corinthians 14:1
this along with the John 15:7 scripture

when we are pursuing love it is a safegaurd against going off
"when I pray for people it's my goal for them to experience the love and compassion of the L-rd"
"it's really a lifestyle"
"the anointing will be upon us in different levels and in different situations....but if we are walking in these things the anoiting will certainly grow"

Rohn Price

You have to be true to the way the L-rd made you to recieve the word. It says in 2nd Peter that the word did not came alone but with the interpretation by the Spirit. The interpretation should come from the L-rd, don't try to work out the puzzle on your on. Also look for confirmation Scriptures. Have faith for earthly confirmation...what does it say here "Whatever he does shall prosper". When you get a word don't leave it off in some spiritual space, look for confirmation from every day life outside your influence, then you can run with it.

Praying about this evening and was very excited....really need to make sure your heart is in the right place. Just be thanking the L-rd and think on good things for the person in front of you.

Prophetic vision for the group: "Saw a tree and it was planted with deep roots, and I knew this tree meant abiding. And I saw the leaves of tree reach way way up, and I saw the wind rustle through the trees. We don't know where the Spirit goes, except by the rustling of the leaves (John 3:8)."

Prophetic word for the group: "Put your roots down deep in the soil of His word and your leaves up high and you will know the passing of the Spirit through your lives...the work of the Spirit through your lives. Do not think you will not see the work of the spirit in your life. Do not let anxiety, circumstances, confusion, come in the way from you knowing the passing of the Spirit through your life." Psalm 1:2-3

James Morse

About the only way you can not abide if you break yourself off and seek your own desire. To abide is obedience, and to mediate on Scripture (what Psalm 1 is about). The guy who is sitting in the seat of the scornful has his progress stopping. Having that word inside you is what enables you to abide. Don't let the book of the Law depart from you, fear not, but mediate on it day and night. What scripture you mediate on will be engrafted into your soul and will bear fruit in your life.

Now is the Day - by Alanna 3/23/04
2 Cor 5:1-7, 5:15-21, 6:1-2

from now on we don't regard others from a worldly point of view
that is the ministry of reconciliation
now is the day of salvation
Perseverance - by Martin 3/15/04
1 Samuel 17:34-50

Thoughts:
David spent time with the sheep – day after day.
Bears & Lions are not as big as Goliath but just as life threatening. G-d used them to build David’s faith.
The L-rd provided David with the skill to take on Goliath. He will not leave you unprepared.
David relied on strong faith, boldness, and a great foundation. He made his stance known, pulled resources, and ran towards the enemy.

In Yeshua's Name - by Jonathan 1/27/04

You’ve probably heard the phrase. Why do we use it? 4 reasons:

1. Authority in the heavenly realm
As God’s son, he has the right to give authority: Luke 10:19 (After 72 return, amazed at their ability to even cast out demons)
As a high priest, he intercedes before God’s throne: Heb 7:23-25; Heb 4:14-16

2. Yeshua tells us he is the conduit: John 14:6 (way, truth and life)

3. Examples in the N.C.: Acts 4:8-12; 1 Cor 6:11 (Big list of sins first, then this verse)
Coll 3:17 (Actions in Yeshua’s name)

4. Worship: Philippians 2:8-11

Are we explicitly commanded to use His name in prayer? No. Yeshua doesn’t pray in His own name in the Lord’s Prayer. But there’s power in His name, as the passage in Philippians tells us.
